10 Ways to Save Money on Entertainment
Saving & Investment

Having lots of fun can be cheap and enjoyable

Entertainment might be something you can survive without but as the saying goes: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” Entertainment is part of our lives and even though it is the first thing we cut when we are in times of financial trouble, there are many cheap and enjoyable activities you can take. Here are some tips how to spend less money on entertainment and still have fun:

1. Free activities are also fun. Who says that you must spend money on entertainment when there are so many free activities? For instance biking, walking, or going in the park are fun and they don't cost a penny. Additionally, they are a healthy way to spend your free time.

2. Eat out less. Delis, not to mention restaurants, are too expensive for regular eating. So, even if you still want to go out frequently, don't eat out or get something small and cheap.

3. Cook fancy dishes at home. Eating out less doesn't mean you should starve or you should eat boring meals. When you invite friends at home rather than meet them at restaurants and you do the cooking, this will save you a lot. Well, it is true that it takes time but if you have a lot of free time and not so much money, cooking at home is the way to go!

4. Cancel your cable subscription. The Internet is a great source of music, videos, news, etc., so if you have a broadband connection, cable subscription is plain useless. You can watch so many movies online that it makes no sense to continue paying for cable TV.

5. Cancel magazine subscriptions. Similarly to cable, magazine subscriptions are also something you should cut. You can read magazines online or go to a library, so you still can continue reading your favorite magazines but for free.

6. Rent movies. If you are a movie maniac, this could be a big sacrifice but tough times require tough measures. Going to the movies is fun and it is true that there are movies, which lose their charm, if you watch them on a PC at home but if you see that you are spending a fortune on movies, consider renting movies as a way to save money.

7. Season passes. Season passes are a great way to save from concerts, museums and the like. If there is an activity you like a lot, it could be much cheaper if you get a season pass rather than buy tickets for each event you attend.

8. Find guides for free events. Similarly to free activities, there are free events, which are fun. If you want to be informed about the current free events in your area, find a guide for free events and see what's available.

9. Happy hour, points and coupons. Many pubs have a happy hour when drinks are half price – take advantage of that. Also, points, coupons and all sorts of discounts can save you a lot of money for flying and vacation.

10. Don't take part in lotteries and similar activities. Gambling is a vice, not fun. But even if you are not a gambler, there are similar activities, i.e. lotteries and the like where you pay for participation and the chance to win is minimal. If you waste your money for such activities, stop doing it and you will be much better off!

Entertainment doesn't have to be expensive to be fun. There are many ways to cut the money you spend on entertainment and have a lot of fun. You just need to be creative (and frugal, too) and you will soon see how much money you can save on entertainment. Of course, if you make your best to save on food, clothes, transportation, and utilities, this is only better!
